Feel the Magic

One of the biggest hyped components of the year has certainly been the Truvativ Hammerschmidt, a dual ring planetary drive crankset which incorporates two gear ratio’s into one simple sleek crankset. The system is simple, sleek and relatively light weight, and will allow both rider and frame manufacturer some simple options and solutions to their bicycle drive. The heart of the hammerschmidt is mounted directly onto the frame via the ISCG 03 or ISCG 05 mounting tabs [these will need to be suitably strong and within close tolerance of course] allowing virtually ANY frame to make use of this system without any fuss or proprietary component issues. Whats more is the Hammerschmidt bottom bracket although being a unique bottom bracket for the system, conforms to the regular bottom bracket standards and will be available in all of the current shell widths. In essence the Hammerschmidt is a system which can be incorporated after-market into a frame with ISCG tabs very simply and somewhat cose effectively too.

We have been fortunate enough to have followed the progress of this little project, but for the rest of you who have not seen it all here are a few specs:

Looking for two ring gear range but with the hassle-free nature of a single ring crank? HammerSchimdt takes a fresh approach on front shifting by integrating a revolutionary new transmission system into the front crank delivering a 22/36 or 24/38 gear range all with a single ring! Shifts perform under power and while coasting. We’ll mention that shifts are instantaneous, once you ride HammerSchmidt you’ll fully appreciate what we’re claiming.

Whats New

  • OverDrive Technology
  • HammerSchmidt Crankarm – optimized for All Mountain
  • Funnel Chain Retention

Features and Benefits

  • OverDrive Technology – 2-speed internal transmission system
  • Shift on Demand. Shift underload or while coasting
  • Funnel Chain Retention
  • Freedom in frame design. System requirements are ISCG 03 or 05
  • Tight package allows for tons of ground clearance

Things to remember

  • Fastest Front Shift Ever!
  • Single-Ring Chain Retention
  • Tight Package – loads of ground clearance

Truvativ have been working for quite some time on this system and it certainly shows from the quality of the prototypes they were showing at Eurobike. They had a few all over the show at various frame manufacturers booths as well as a few neat little displays at their own booth. Here is a neat little display image of the crankset with a clear perspex cover plate so that you can view the innards:

I spent a little bit of time riding one prior to the show and during the show, and I honestly can not believe the precision and the speed of the shifting. Its actually so fast that it will take some getting used to as you need to adjust your cadence so abruptly it is difficult doing so without a jolt. It certainly has a future in my eyes but only time will tell whether it will be accepted into the marked by the consumer, Morewood will be looking forward to receiving a few of these puppies in the next little while to perform some testing of their own

[its only a fair trade seeing as Brian Bos the project manager for Hammerschmidt rides a Morewood Shova LT ;) ]
